Shadow G8 Meeting, New York 2007

The Shadow G8 brought together a small group of leading thinkers from a diverse group of countries to grade the past performance of the G8, highlight issues that have been left off the table, and reformulate issues that are already on the table.

A diverse group of concerned citizens from around the world (including former government officials and leading economists) met at Columbia University on February 9 2007, under the sponsorship of the Initiative of Policy Dialogue, the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, and Erlassjahr, grade the past performance of the G8, highlight issues that have been left off the table, and how the leaders of the G-8, meeting in Heiligendamm, Germany on June 6-8, 2007, might most effectively reformulate the issues.

We considered the announced agenda of growth with responsibility, what might or should be included in that agenda, and what we considered to be the minimum aspirations – the bar that the leaders should set for themselves in advancing this important agenda. We also considered the issues that risk being left off that agenda. There was a remarkable degree of consensus among the group.
