Welcome to the Initiative for Policy Dialogue’s monthly newsletter. Founded in July 2000 by Nobel Laureate Joseph E. Stiglitz, the Initiative for Policy Dialogue (IPD) works to broaden dialogue and explore trade-offs in development policy by bringing the best ideas in development to policymakers facing globalization’s complex challenges and opportunities. We strive to contribute to a more equitably governed world by democratizing the production and use of knowledge.

Joseph E. Stiglitz and Timothy Nolan will discuss Stiglitz’s new book, The Road to Freedom: Economics and the Good Society. In the book, Stiglitz draws on the work of contemporary philosophers to explain a deeper, more human way to assess freedoms. See ticket details here.

April 30, 2024, 6:30-8:30 pm. The London School of Economics and Political Science. Hosted by the Programme on Cohesive Capitalism.

Professor Mary Kaldor (London School of Economics and Political Science) will host Joseph E. Stiglitz for a talk on the subject of his new book and what freedom really means. Stiglitz will discuss how The Road to Freedom describes how our neoliberal economic models have impacted our legal and social freedoms in surprising ways.

The National Press Club Headliners: Joseph Stiglitz

April 17, 2024. The National Press Club.

Joseph E. Stiglitz (Columbia, IPD) released the findings of a new study on the relationship between press freedom and advancing democratic values and economic development. The study is part of UNESCO’s “World Trends in Freedom of Expression and Media Development Series.” Following remarks, there was a panel discussion with Arturo Herrera Gutierrez (Equitable Growth, Finance, and Institutions Practice Group; World Bank) and Eliot Minchenberg (UNESCO).

Inaugural Joseph E. Stiglitz Lecture on Inequality and the Good Society

April 15, 2024. Hesburgh Center for International Studies at the University of Notre Dame.

Inequality is a complex and multi-dimensional challenge that is a major threat to our social fabric, our faith in core institutions, and our democratic governance. Joseph E. Stiglitz (Columbia, IPD) delivered a lecture on inequality.

This lecture is the first in a new annual series that will honor Stiglitz’s legacy and Notre Dame’s public commitment to focusing on issues of poverty and marginalization by hosting lectures on these critical issues. See more information here.

Martín Guzmán Presents at the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences

Martín Guzmán (Columbia University SIPA, IPD) has been appointed as an academic member of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences, a committee that aims to promote social, economic, and juridical sciences.

Plenary Session on Disability and the Human Condition

April 9-10, 2024. Casina Pio IV, Vatican City. Hosted by the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences.

Research has found that people who live with disabilities often live in worse economic conditions and participate less in social and cultural life than members of the general population. This plenary brought together participants from across the world and focused on identifying the specific social determinants that represent barriers for people with disabilities. Participants discussed the cultural, regulatory, and policy changes that would be needed to make effective the rights of all people enshrined in the UN Convention. As members of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences, Joseph E. Stiglitz and Martín Guzmán participated in the plenary discussion.

Martín Guzmán Presents on Sovereign Debt Analysis at the Paris School of Economics

April 4, 2024. Finance for Development Lab, Paris School of Economics. Hosted by Paris School of Economics.

In Paris, Martín Guzmán delivered the talk, “The practice of sovereign debt sustainability analysis,” about the essential elements of a debt sustainability analysis. Topics discussed included debt payment capacity, endogenous effects of policies, and restructuring negotiations. Guzmán presented this lecture as he is leading a new IPD program that focuses on expanding research on and understanding of issues related to sovereign debt.

Third Conference on the Interconnectedness of Financial Systems

March 28-29, 2024. Federal Reserve Board, Washington. D.C. Organized by the Federal Reserve Board.

This conference brought together leading academics and policymakers to discuss the interconnectedness of the financial systems, including concerning topics related to monetary policy, systemic risk-assessment, and the impact of climate change on financial stability. Agostino Capponi (Columbia), Anil Kashyap (Chicago), Michael Kiley (Fed Board), Guillermo Ordoñez (Penn), and Chester Spatt (Carnegie Mellon) participated in a roundtable discussion. Joseph E. Stiglitz delivered the keynote speech.

The organizing committee was Levent Altinoglu (Fed Board), Jin-Wook Chang (Fed Board), Carlos Ramírez (Fed Board), and Jessie Wang (Fed Board).

Post-Pandemic Macroeconomics Conference

March 22 & 23, 2024. The School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) at Columbia University. Organized by IPD, The Columbia Center for Political Economy (CPE) and The Institute for Macroeconomic & Policy Analysis (IMPA).

A series of unprecedented shocks have hit the global economy over the past decade and a half, calling into question both the prevailing macroeconomic models and the policies based on them. The workshop addressed the consequences for cyclical behavior and macroeconomic policy of market power. Participants discussed questions about how power affects macroeconomics and the equilibrating forces returning the economy to full employment with stable prices.

The conference included a public panel: Post Pandemic Inflation and Disinflation: Explanations and Lessons. Did the Central Banks Get It Right? with panelists Joseph E. Stiglitz (Columbia University and IPD), Paul Beaudry (Vancouver School of Economics), Glenn Hubbard (Columbia Business School), Lindsay Owens (Groundwork Collaborative), and Martín Guzmán (Columbia University SIPA and IPD).
