Today well over one billion people live in absolute poverty. People in such a state of poverty cannot obtain even their minimum needs—access to food and clean water, basic health services, primary education, shelter. In addition to the extreme poverty that is rampant in the developing world there are significant pockets of deprivation present even in wealthy nations.
