Welcome to the Initiative for Policy Dialogue’s monthly newsletter. Founded in July 2000 by Nobel Laureate Joseph E. Stiglitz, the Initiative for Policy Dialogue (IPD) works to broaden dialogue and explore trade-offs in development policy by bringing the best ideas in development to policymakers facing globalization’s complex challenges and opportunities. We strive to contribute to a more equitably governed world by democratizing the production and use of knowledge.

Upcoming Events

March 22 & 23, 2024, The School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) at Columbia University. Organized by IPD, The Columbia Center for Political Economy (CPE) and The Institute for Macroeconomic & Policy Analysis (IMPA).

A series of unprecedented shocks have hit the global economy over the past decade and a half, calling into question both the prevailing macroeconomic models and the policies based on them. The workshop aims to address the consequences for cyclical behavior and macroeconomic policy of market power, and the post-pandemic/post-war in Ukraine inflationary episode. IPD’s Visit with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in Tokyo

March 11—13, 2024, Tokyo, Japan. Organized by JICA.

Joseph E. Stiglitz (IPD, Columbia University) and Arjan Jayadev (IPD, Columbia University) traveled to Tokyo, Japan to hold talks and meetings with JICA members including JICA President Akihiko Tanaka and Executive Director of JICA Sadako Research Institute for Peace and Development Yoichi Mine.

Continuing a longtime collaboration between IPD and JICA, participants discussed defining economic success beyond GPD, the future of employment in a changing economy, security, the Japanese economy, and the green economy, among other emerging issues.  

Book Presentation for the Forthcoming “The Future of Work in Developing Countries”

March 11, Toyko Japan. Organized by JICA.

JICA Ogata Sadako Research Institute for Peace and Development (JICA Ogata Research Institute), together with IPD will soon publish a new research project, the fifth collaborative project between the two institutes. “The Future of Work in Developing Countries” analyzes issues around unemployment from multiple angles, spanning both macro and micro perspectives. During the panel “The Future of Employment in a Changing Global Economy” JICA and IPD participants discussed the issues explored in the forthcoming book.

Economics Staff Associate

Columbia Business School is seeking to hire two Staff Associates for the Economics Division. Staff associates will conduct empirical research on the microeconomic determinants of productivity growth and innovative behavior by firms in both developed and developing countries, under the supervision of Joseph E. Stiglitz and other IPD-affiliated faculty. Learn more here.

Sovereign Debt Economics Staff Associate

IPD is seeking a Research Staff Associate. The work will include empirical and theoretical research on sovereign debt and the emergence, propagation, and resolution of sovereign debt crises. This position provides an opportunity to gain experience in academic business research, with a special focus on fields such as finance, economics, statistics, and data science; and, would be ideal preparation for a Ph.D. program or other graduate study.
