This novel project combines top-notch research with well-thought civic engagement harnessed towards transcending the current juncture and restructuring the island’s outdated economic model. The initiative will use first-class research as the foundation for a series of activities that will engage a wide swath of Puerto Rican stakeholders in considering, discussing, crafting and implementing the optimal policy solutions to the current conundrum.

After the First Author’s Meeting held at IPD in New York in 2014, seventeen scholars, experts on development, from more than a dozen prestigious institutions gathered on September 4th, 2015 to present their findings to build the foundaton for the future economic policy in Puerto Rico. They gathered to assess how to jump start a process that can produce a new Industrial Policy for Puerto Rico, one that can identify, create and foster opportunities for future economic growth.
Among the topics discussed were: the constraints and opportunities presented by the current fiscal and economic crisis; what type of industrial policy design would work best for Puerto Rico; and how to craft a productive dialogue among key stakeholders to build agreement on key policies.
