Conference on New Tax Policy

The Initiative for Policy Dialogue (IPD) at Columbia University and the Institute for Macroeconomic and Policy Analysis (IMPA) at American University co-hosted a one-day academic symposium focused on rethinking U.S. tax policy ahead of the scheduled expiration of key provisions of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) in 2025.

The workshop began with a keynote conversation between Elizabeth Pancotti (Groundwork Collaborative) and Joseph E. Stiglitz (Columbia University, IPD) titled Rethinking Progressive Tax Policy, based on their recent co-authored paper (available here.)

The workshop continued with three expert panels exploring different areas of the U.S. tax system:

Panel on International Taxation

Panel on Corporate Taxation

Panelists: Reuven Avi-Yonah (University of Michigan), Patrick Kennedy (UCLA), Joseph Stiglitz (Columbia University), and Owen Zidar (Princeton University)

Panel on Individual Taxation
Moderator: Kitty Richards (Groundwork Collaborative)
Panelists: David Kamin (NYU), Zachary Liscow (Yale Law School), Elena Patel (University of Utah), and Max Risch (Carnegie Mellon University)
